WORKING WITH PICTURES IN MICROSOFT WORD 2007

As in the previous editions of Microsoft Word, pictures can be added to the Word 2007 documents and modified in different ways. This version of Word offers many valuable tools which make inserting, modifying and working with pictures very easy.

This text will show you how to insert a picture to a Word document, how to change the style, the shape and a few more things which will make working with pictures much easier.

1. How to Insert a picture

  • First, you need to place the mouse pointer where you would like the picture to be placed.
  • Select the Insert tab.
  • Then click the Picture command.

  • After you select the picture you want to use, click Insert and the picture will appear in your document.

  • First, select the image;
  • Then, select the Picture Tool Format tab;
  • Click the Text Wrapping command in the Arrange section.

  • Select an option for the text wrapping you want to use from the menu and left-click on it.
  • If none of the options helped you to wrap the text the way you wanted, then click the More Layout Options from the Text Wrapping menu. An Advanced Layout dialog box will appear where you can make changes which will provide the text wrapping you wanted.

  •  Left-click on the corner of the picture and while holding the left mouse button resize the picture.

4. How to Crop a Picture

Cropping is a process used to fix or improve photos or images, by cutting out or removing a part of the picture in order to leave behind just the part which is required.

  • Select the Picture;
  • Select the Format tab;
  • Click on the Crop command and the black cropping handles will appear.

  • Left-click on the handle and move it to crop the image.
  • When you’ve finished cropping the image, click the Crop command to deselect the crop tool

5. How to Compress a Picture

Image compression represents minimizing the size in bytes of the image file without degrading the quality of the image.

  • Select the Picture;
  • Select the Format tab;
  • Click the Compress Pictures command in the Adjust group and a dialog box will appear;
  • Click the Options button to Access the Compression Settings dialog box.

  • Choose the target output;
  • Change the default picture settings you wish;
  • Click OK in the Compression Settings dialog box;
  • Click OK in the Compress Pictures dialog box.

It is very important to understand that resizing and cropping images does not decrease or change the image file size in any way, but compression will change the size of the image.

6. How to Rotate a picture

  • Select the picture;
  • Left-click on the Rotate button;
  • Choose one of the orientations listed in the Rotate drop down menu.

  • If none of the orientations helped you to rotate the picture the way you wanted, then click the More Rotation Options from the Rotation drop down menu. A Size dialog box will appear where you can make changes which will provide the rotation you wanted.

7. Other Picture Tools

There are many other things you can do in order to modify the picture. From the Format tab you can choose some of the other useful commands which include:

  • Change Picture command

With this command you can select a new picture from your computer.

  • Reset Picture command

By choosing this command you can revert to the original image.

  • Brightness command

With this command you can adjust the brightness of the image.

  • Color command

This command helps you to adjust the contrast of the image from light to dark.

  • Recolor command

This command is used to modify the color of the picture in many ways.

8. How to change the Shape of a picture

  • Select the picture;
  • Then select the Format tab;
  • Click the Picture Shape icon and a drop down menu will appear.
  • Once you have chosen the shape you want, left-click the shape to select it.

  • Select the picture;
  • Select the Format tab;

Click the More drop-down arrow to display all the picture styles.

  • Place the mouse pointer over a picture style to see the Live Preview of the picture style in the document.
  • Once you have chosen the style you want, left-click on it to select it.

10. How to Add a Border to a Picture Manually

  • Select the picture;
  • Select the Format tab.;
  • Left-click the Picture Border command and select one of the offered colors. If you can’t find the color you need you may choose it in the dialog box which is opened by clicking the More Outline Colors.

  • You can also select Weight from the menu and choose a line weight;
  • Or, you can select Dashes from the menu and choose a line dashes.

12. How to Change Picture Effects

  • Select the picture;
  • Select the Format tab.;
  • Left-click the Picture Effects command and select one of the offered effects.
