The following article will teach you how to:

  • Determine the Word Count of a document.
  • Where to find other document statistics such as: Character, Line and Page Count.
  • How to determine the statistics of a selected text.

You have probably been asked to write a document with a word limit or fulfil a web based form that has a character limit. That’s where you need Word Count, which is a tool that counts the number of word on your document at any given time. Besides that it also counts pages, characters, paragraphs and lines as shown on the picture below. It even lets us chose whether we want to include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes in the count.

In the Status Bar, on the down left corner of the screen, Microsoft Word 2010 provides a Word Count or a live readout of the number of typed words in total, at the moment.

But, if you select a text then it would show how many words that text has as a part of the whole document.

1. In order to view the Word Count of a selected text in a different way, first select a text and then click on the Review tab in the middle of the Menu Bar, and then click on Word Count button that is located on the far left of the bar.

2. Here you can see the same dialog box again and now it displays the count for the selection we have made.
