HOW TO APPLY, MODIFY AND CREATE A STYLE IN MICROSOFT WORD 2010

Style is a combination of formatting characteristics, such as font name, size, color, paragraph alignment and spacing.

Styles in Word 2010 facilitate creation of consistent and well-formatted documents.

This tutorial illustrates:

  • How to apply a Style;
  • How to apply a Style Set;
  • How to modify a Style; and
  • How to create a New Style.

1. Applying a style for some parts of the document

  • First, you should select the text you want to format

  • In the Styles group, click on the More drop-down arrow to see additional styles.

  • Now, move the pointer over each style to see a live preview of the document. You can choose and select the style that you want. Next, you will see that the selected text appears formatted in that style.

2. Applying a Style Set- (style for the entire document)

Style Sets is a combination of several elements (title, heading, and paragraph styles). Using Style Sets you can format all the elements of your document at once, rather than formatting your title and headings separately.

  • First, click on the Change Styles command on the Ribbon. A drop-down menu will appear.
  • From the drop-down menu, select Style Set.

  • Next, you should select the Style Set that you want. The entire document will be transformed in the chosen Style Set.

Several different Style Sets will be presented in the following pictures:

  • Elegant

3. Modifying a Style

  • Go to the style you want to modify in the Styles group;
  • Right-click that style. A drop-down menu will appear;
  • Click Modify;

  • The Modify Style dialog box appears. You can make changes to the formatting and the name of the style.

  • At the end, you should click OK to apply the modifications to the style.

4. Creating a New Style

  • Click on the arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Change Styles button. The Styles window appears.
  • Click on the New Style button at the bottom.

  • A new dialog box appears. Enter a name for the style, and set the text formatting the way you want.

  • Click OK and the new style will appear in the task pane.
