Microsoft Word 2010

This article will show you how to insert Footnotes and Endnotes in Microsoft Word 2010.

1. First open a saved document in Microsoft Word 2010 that you have some text in and go to the end of a paragraph. Then click on the References tab.

Note: Here you can see the Footnotes section which has the following buttons:

  • Insert Footnote

2

  • Insert Endnote

3

  • Next Footnote

4

  • Show Notes

5

2. Now click on the Insert Footnote button.

6

Note: Now see that at the end of the paragraph there is the number 1 as a Footnote.

and a Footnote at the bottom of the page in the Footer.

7

3. Now write the text you want your Footnote to have by simply clicking on the selected field, like shown in the picture above. The text you have written should appear like this.

9

Note: You could format the Footnote just like any other text. For example if you highlight the text from the Footnote and go to the Home tab, you will see that you have all the usual options from Bold, Italic, etc.

10

4. In order to put an Endnote into a document you need to do the same process again. For example click at the end of a paragraph and go to the References tab and then select Insert Endnote.

11

Note: Notice that Microsoft Word 2010 will bring you to the end of the document where the Endnote is located.

12

Note: If you hover with your mouse pointer on the Footnote or Endnote you will see that would show the text that is written in it.

5. In order to view what is written as a Footnote or an Endnote, again just click on the References tab and select Show Notes. After you have done that now you can either chose to view the footnote area or the endnote area. Whichever you chose, just click on the OK button and it will place you right up there.

6. Another way to do this is to once again select the References tab and then click on the downward arrow of the Next Footnote button and it would lead you to the desired destination.
